Hmm.. I was wondering. Why do we have to tilt the boiling tube sideways / horizontal when we heat it? [e.g. diagram in SBP paper, marking scheme page 4 Q3a(ii)] I drew the boiling tube upright and the teacher cut marks. Sad Same with the other experiment in which you burn the glass wool soaked in ethanol. What would happen if you place the boiling tube upright?

Actually, when we tilt the boiling tube sideways / horizontal when heating, larger surface area will expose for heating as compared when we place the boiling tube upright.  Besides, it also exposed to the uniform heating in this way...
