I was teaching Math previously (now I teach English). Teaching English & Teaching Math in English are two different things. Simplifying instructional language is one way to get our students to understand what we are trying to deliver. As a CF (BSS), the first exercise I'd given to Science & English teachers is simplifying instructional language since they are all good in English. In classroom, repetition of the instruction might help. For example; A teacher can give an instruction and at the same time make a body language (create your own) for the instruction as in, "keep quiet," normally we will put a finger on our pouting lips. I believe all teachers are creative; if you think you're not, creativeness can be trained (Tony Buzan - The Power Of Creative Mind). Good Luck... Cheesy

Some pupils does not understand English

If you do not have no choice ... what to do.  Just try your best to teach in English.

Hai Cikgu Caroline,

Well Cikgu , infact the use of other language for translation is not allowed unless it is the last resort. I know it is quite difficult when you try to make the students understand what you want them to know. But when you keep on drilling on certain sentence pattern that is usually being used and alwys do revisions on certain term and with the help of your teaching aids , I for sure say that there won't be any problem. Make the environment be condusive. Do some R&D in your teaching and learning process. Later you will see the fruit of success.....

Just sharing.....

Please don't ever use short cuts......Maybe easy but the impact will be different.

Hello again,

I just wonder when this thread will be put to rest. But just before some one ends it, perhaps might tickle your brain a little.

One of the "excellent" states in the Peninsular came top in the 2008 UPSR result. While meeting our counterparts at a seminar at Goldcourse Hotel, they whispered to us that the teaching of these two subjects was in BM. It seems to us that they knew all along that the pupils would be allowed to attempt the questions in BM!!! Shocked Comment as you please but no quotes, please.

Now, this doesn't mean that I retract my earlier views.

Unfortunately, that's the very thing that is happening in our schools nowadays.

Should I say yes or NO. Well after all two more years from today onward we still have to switch back to BM right. What a waste....

Why not? You can use both BI or BM in teaching Math PPSMI.
