Nothing is impossible if we put our mind to it

« on: January 04, 2009, 11:35:10 AM »

I just wonder whether there is any specific website or magazines that we should pay attention on the technology development in order to get the latest information.

We all know search engines will give tons of technology development but most of them no use to our teaching.

In fact I am doing the search right now. Um... if everyone has to go through the same process, it will be 'unproductive'. Anyway, I will post some websites here when I find some relevant one.

The search topic should be simplified to the nearest possible search e.g Technology Development on Computer or etc. or else thousands will pop up in front of you. That will  make search more difficult

I believe this link will give some relevant info on Technology Development:

About WCIT 2008

Held once every two years, the World Congress on Information Technology is a premier global ICT forum that brings together global leaders in business, government and academia. Often billed as the Olympics of ICT, it impacts global economic and social development through the exchange of policies and ideas on technology.

Hope others will help in posting relevant articles or links here too.

Thanks.

Magazines seems to be a better choice for teachers to 'mine' for latest development of I.T

If you need to 'mine' for such info use search engine and search on I.T or any relevant keywords for the info. Do no use Technology Development computer as keyword becos such search won't really work efficiently. Add magazine with relevant keywords will do a better search.

Here is another good online magazine:

The following is extracted from IT magazine which revealed IT development trend:

Quote
Computing Technologies And Trends Leading Into 2009
Written by Agnes Thoompunkal

As a new year dawns upon us, we turn the spotlight on the trends and technologies that are leading into 2009 and a few that will continue to be researched.

They are calling it the era of convergence and, well, it does seem to be true. Pick out any of the 10 trends, buzzwords or technologies on this list, and you will see that they overlap with at least one other subject on the list. That’s exactly how these technologies are expected to shape up in the coming year—gradually converging on each other by degrees. 2009 should witness the next wave of these technologies, which will be about building on and assembling these technologies to deliver value.

It will be apparent that many of the trends on this list such as cloud computing, virtualisation and Software-as-a-Service, have been in active use for many years. But the last year has seen these technologies mature to the extent that no IT organisation can afford to ignore them. Technologies like multi-core processors that were until recently the exclusive domain of research scientists in a few high profile institutions, are now finding their way to home desktops. Cloud computing centres are making mighty resources available to small businesses and start-ups. And open source is inviting everybody in.

So without further ado, let’s head to the 10 technologies and trends that we think will rock the IT world in 2009.

Cloud computing

The cloud computing everybody is talking about today has been around for at least as long as the Web. Every time you use your Webmail, you are already experiencing the facility of a cloud utility—access from anywhere from any Net-connected machine, any time you want. What is happening now is a concerted push by larger IT organisations to offer enterprise-level resources on-the-tap. So even a small organisation with limited means can summon, let’s say, five extra servers to use as a testbed for its application before actual deployment at the client’s end. Another organisation could deal with a surge in traffic to its website for a short period by hiring another 10 servers. These companies would not have to buy the servers, but just pay for the hours or days they need it. But cloud computing doesn’t stop at servers. IBM, which recently opened a cloud computing centre in Bangalore, extends software, computing and services to help clients implement their work on the cloud. So clients can run proof-of-concepts, and receive assistance from experts in designing and deploying their own solutions behind their firewalls.

Dr Manish Gupta, associate director, IBM India Research Laboratory, believes that cloud computing is a development whose time has come. “Many companies need an alternative to maxed-out data centres—a way to cut IT corners and still stay competitive. For such enterprises, cloud computing, with its inherent cost benefits and infrastructure flexibility, looks a lot like answered prayers,” he says. He points out how organisations stand to gain: “Cloud consumers of all sizes can save a bundle on infrastructure hardware, software and labour costs. Businesses can stop worrying about backing up their data, and users can stop carrying their data with them when they travel.”

In his opinion, the real challenge of cloud computing lies before programmers who need to design rugged, scalable and versatile applications for the Web. He says, “There is an urgent need for programmers to adopt new methods in designing software for Web-based applications to support the ever growing population of both mobile and traditional Web application users.” He also points out that the programming challenge presented by cloud computing is one of scale and that “…diligently programming just one machine isn’t enough; we need to be able to program thousands of machines to make them handle the enormous
