Greetings, Ladies  & Gentlemen. Welcome to the Wind Orchestra, Symphonic Band and Marching Band section! Let's share what we know and at the same time, learn what we don't from those who do. Being in Sarawak means that we're quite a distance from the 'epicentre' of the Malaysian orchestra / band scene but, that shouldn't stop us from moving forward.

Please begin by introducing yourself and your orchestra / band. Tell us the kind of music played by your group (i.e. titles and themes would help!), the size of your group and what your role is in that group. After that, it's up to you. Interested parties are also welcome.

I was one of the (gerko) marching band members back in 1984-86 in IP Rajang, Bintangor (Hu! Hu! How time flies!). On registration, I had only manage to grab a melodion, as the other members of the band had 'secured' all the percussion and wind instruments. In the final year of our training, we were invited to perform at SK Nanga Stras, Bintangor 1986 sports meet, led by our music lecturer, Mr Sagim Suar. It was in fact our Co-curricular final year project. To each and everyone of us, we had performed excellently then. After my training, I started a little marching band in my first school - SK Nanga Dalai, Song (1987 - 1989). It was task to form the band, but the result was very encouraging. I noted that the discipline among the band members was very good. (Could it have been the commanders' 'shoutings' that had turned the kids to be good listeners?)

Just sharing ...

SM Sains Kuching Wind Orchestra (a.k.a. The SainsKu Winds)

We're a 3 section orchestra - Brass, Woodwinds, & Percussion. Our current orchestral grade level is 2. We currently have 50 student-musicians, 5 teachers, 1 Senior Assistant (as chairperson), and 2 periodic instructors.

Our repertoire includes Grade 1.5 - Grade 2.5 arrangements by J. Swearingen, S. Yaacub, J. Bocock and M. Sweeney of songs ranging from popular to modern classics - both Malaysian and foreign.

The SainsKu Winds' unofficial theme songs are 'Hujan Di Tengah Hari' (P. Ramlee, arr. S. Yaacub) and 'Crunch Time' (J. Bocock).

Started in 1997 as a marching band but transitioned in 2002 to a concert wind orchestra after 2 teachers and 2 student leaders paid a visit to the SBP Wind Orchestra Competition in Peninsular Malaysia. Since then, we have been a consistent feature in the SBP WO Competition each year. Our first foray into the Comps surprised us with a silver medal win and we have been silver medalling it every year. Our challenge is to achieve a gold medal and successfully transition into Division 1 by 2010.

We're known as the smallest group in the Comps but we're also known for our friendliness and tenacity in holding on to the silver medal standings in the face of stiff competition.

I was a Boys' Brigade (Briged Putra) Marching Band member during my secondary school days in Penang. I started with the cymbals and then as the Bass Drummer (for a short while before I complete my schooling).
