Hi, all Chemistry teachers, i came across a question from my students about this topic? may i know which of the following solution is the right one? any sharing will be kindly appreciated.

The table shows the total volume of gas collected at regular intervals in a reaction.

Time (s)             0          30            60              90               120               150             180              210
Volume of         0.0        4.0            7.4            10.4              12.8              14.6           17.2             17.2
gas (cm3)

What is the average rate of reaction in the second minute?

Solution A

Average rate of reaction = 12.8/120

Solution B

Average rate of reaction = (12.8-7.4)/(120-60)

Among Solution A & B, which one is the right solution for the above question?

Thanks a lot, Mr. Ting. At least i'm not misleading the students cause the answer was provided by teachers in my school. and students got confused and they came and approaching me for seeking the right answer.

Hi,
The answer as shown in solution A is meant for average rate for the 1st 2 minutes whereas the answer as shown in solution B is average rate in / during second minute.
Rate at 2nd minute ( also known as instantaneous rate) = gradient of tangent at 2nd minute.
Try to teach students to draw a good tangent as there is a range whereby the answers will be accepted.

With regards
