To all Chemistry teachers, i found out that a lot of students facing problems when they try to answer paper 3 for Chemistry and also when they do their practical in the lab, especially when they need to find the problem statement, hypothesis and variables for the experiment that they need to do.

Well, i hope that through this post, everyone of us here will provide information regarding on all the practical that we are dealing with based on the Chemistry Practical Book either Form 4 or Form 5. i'm sure each sharing will be benefited all here.......

Let me begin first,...............

Practical Book Form 4
Chap. 3: Empirical Formula

Aim: To determine the empirical formula of magnesium oxide
Problem Statement: What is the empirical formula of magnesium oxide?
Hypothesis: The empirical formula of magnesium oxide may be MgO.

Manipulated variable: length of magnesium ribbon
Responding variable: mass of magnesium oxide
Fixed variable: magnesium ribbon

All the information provided are for guideline. Any correction, recommendation or suggestion are most welcome and thanks for those who share here. with regards, TGP Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

Hi,
Just trying to offer my opinion. For certain expt, it is not necessary to have hypothesis, for example the expt to determine the melting point of naphthalene or to determine the empirical formula of metal oxide.
For expt involving investigation of certain factors or to establish the relationship between 2 variables, then it is appropriate to have hypothesis.
As you can see in our Practical Book, some of the expt are classified as activity / laboratory work / experiment. Only for those classifed as expt, then you can see that it include variables and hypothesis and also operational definition.

Oh, thanks a lot, Mr. Jong.
At least i can inform all the Chemistry teachers in my school about this so that they don't misled students especially when it comes to practical as some of my students facing problem when they were asked to provide the problem statement, hypothesis and variables for the practical, and yet the practical they carried is only lab activity and not experiment.
