To all Chemistry teachers,
i came across a problem when asking the students to draw electronic structure of bonding atoms, especially when it comes to the arrangement of electrons in the overlapping region of two atoms when a covalent compound is formed.

May i know among diagram 1 & 2 below, which one is the right one? Any sharing is kindly appreciated. Thanks. Cheesy

Hi, Mr Tay... both are acceptable in SPM... but normally i ask my student to use the first method because it is easy to check where the electrons belong to..

But Mr. Ting, if i'm not mistaken. i'd being told that the first drawing was wrong. For SPM, the students must draw the diagram as it is like in diagram 2. Please correct me if i'm wrong. Thanks anyway for your feedback. Your sharing is kindly appreciated. Thanks again. Cheesy Cheesy

by referring to the marking scheme from other states, i can conclude that the 2nd diagram is frequently used.
As a new teacher i also facing with this problem but after i checked the marking scheme from other states now i encourage my students to draw the 2nd type of diagram.

Both diagrams are acceptable, as long as it shows the sharing of electrons between the atoms involved. If the question mentioned dot-cross diagram, then student have to draw diagrams using dots and crosses.
