I have'nt thought chemistry for 4 years and now i start teaching the subject again.my problem is i always make mistakes in mentioning natrium and not sodium, calium and not potassium, ferum and not iron.I don't want my students to get influenced from what i did.But is it a mistake to mention the old term and not the new term.and since when did they change back to the newterm?And it wil be much easier for the students to memorize Na as natrium and not sodium, Ca as calium and not potassium.During the years of teaching chemistry (1997-2004) it was still in BM and we still use the term natrium and not sodium.One more thing is about the periodic table, which one should we use group III or group 13?i really don't know why these changes occurred because i think that it is much easier if we used group III for the total electon valence is 3 will be in group III but not 13 that is confusing.i really need time to get use to it.any senior chemistry teachers that have gone through 12 years teaching of chemistry?do share with me.tq.

Ca= Calium is wrong,
Ca is calcium and K = Potassium (Kalium is in BM)

Hi,
Natrium in BM but in English it is called sodium and so forth. It is not a new term, it has been existing for years just that we are not used to the terms but I believe with practice , you can overcome it easily. Of course, after laying off for a few years in not teaching chemistry, it will take time to get use to it. Do not worry so much about that.
In some text books and reference books, they still use Group 1 - 8. In Malaysian context, we used Gp 1 - 18 to complement what they are learning in Form 6.
