I have a doubt here. In our practical books and reference books, it was stated that when iodine reacts with NaOH, the solution turns colourless. Today, my school teacher told me that she demonstrated this experiment in the class. I was told that the solution turned translucent yellow colour. Do we need to wait a little longer for the solution to turn colourless or the reaction will take place fast?

In a given chemical reaction, the quantity of chemical sused will affect the colour change. As for iodine, use iodine in solution form and in small quanity. You should be able to get the expected colour change. The same thing goes for acidified potassium manganate(VII) solution with alkene - just add 1 - 2 drops and shaken strongly, you will see the purple colour of acidified potassium manganate(VII) solution decolourises. Generally for dark coloured solution, used in small quantitiy to enable to see the colour change clearly.

The yellow colour formed because excess of iodine used which disolve in aqueous solution to form yellow colour. So use small quantity of iodine.
