1. The birds _____ through the air with their outstretched wings.
    A   fly
    B   glide
    C   paddle
    D   stagger

The answer is B fly. Most of my pupils(41/44) put A  fly as the correct answer.  A tricky question..and based on their understanding..a bird is flying.

What is your answer actually? Is it A fly or B glide? I think the correct answer is B glide.. And yes, this is a tricky question. All of my pupils (16 pupils) put A fly as the answer.

At first place...yes I did think the answer: A fly...just because of the word 'birds' but then when I saw 'outstretched' definitely the answer: B  glide...and I think that the level of the word 'outstretched' is too high for most of the years six pupils...I think so...I guess...

The question I think they quoted it from English textbook Year 6,Magical Movement Unit. There is a text about animal's movement and the 3rd or 4th sentence in last paragraph exactly the same with the question. So the answer is B, glide.

Through one's observations, birds move through the air by either flying or gliding. And birds do 'dive' too. To determine how birds move specifically (and scientifically), we need to clarify:

1. Birds fly by flapping their wings.

2. Birds glide by stretching their wings out.

3, Birds drop themselves and dive (through the air, and into the water) by closing their wings.

Just my two-cent, as I personally think it's simply 'shooting two birds with a stone', i.e. teaching both the language and science.

Why would we want to trick our children, why cant we be more specific, after all, they are learning the language not analysing it, I agree with the answer but not the question. The children first thought of the bird is flying,
For me we should test the children on the basic movement of bird that is flying. Because inorder to glide, birds have to fly. please tech them basic first.

This type of question..to me its good and challenging..just that I was so sad to see my pupils performance. Most of them(96%) give A fly as their answer. Tricked by the word 'birds' without read and relate it with the second clue 'outstretched'. Careless..I guess but its a good lesson to us..teacher. Think of it..

A tricky one indeed but as quoted it is indeed stated in the textbook. So fellow teachers continue to teach as well as drilling the students with upsr format exercises to gear up for UPSR.
