Federation of Malaysian Consumers Association (Fomca) advisor Prof Datuk Mohd Hamdan Adnan said when Dr Sulaiman was given the responsibility to lead the new ministry created in March 1990, he was willing to learn about the rights of the consumers.
Dr Sulaiman had "protected the rights of consumers by strengthening the relevant laws through enforcement besides taking swift action to protect the consumers," Hamdan told Bernama, here on Tuesday.
Hamdan, who was then the Fomca president, described Dr Sulaiman as a friendly and talkative person.
Dr Sulaiman, who died of liver cancer on Tuesday, was among the longest serving ministers stretching almost two decades after being appointed Federal Territories Minister on March 19, 1981 while his last post was as Agriculture Minister before retiring in November 1999.
Graduating with a degree in dentistry from the University of Otago New Zealand, Dr Sulaiman was born in Kuching, Sarawak on March 4, 1933.
The former dental surgeon, who had served with the Sarawak government and Brunei Health Department from 1963 until 1972, had entered politics in 1971 by joining Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) and a year later was appointed as political secretary to Tan Sri Taib Mahmud who was then the Primary Industries Minister.
He first contested in the Sarawak state election in January 1973 for the Sebandi state seat. In the general election in August 1974, Dr Sulaiman contested the Santubong Parliamentary seat and retained the seat for four terms.
He again retained the seat when it was renamed Petra Jaya in the 1990 general election until the March 2004 general election where he did not contest.
Dr Sulaiman, who was a PBB vice-president, received an honorary doctorate from the University Honoris Causa, Flinders University, Australia, in June 1993 and one month later conferred an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from Otago University, New Zealand.
