Deputy Prime Minister said one of the reasons why the poor results of English papers in public examinations was due to the frequent usage of SMS languages in our everyday life. We are teachers and why can't we show good examples by using good and proper English/Bahasa Malaysia in engkabang.net? Proper English is used in majority of web forum created by users in other countries. Why can't we? Why we as teachers use SMS words, 'broken' English, 'bahasa rojak' and expect our pupils to produce good sentences/essays?

Most of us are using the proper English. Some pupils and teachers use the SMS style of spelling, but have been corrected from time to time. Need not get upset about it.

Anyway, thanks for the concern over this matter. I'm one who is with you to support proper English, though I am not good in it. When I say English, I mean English and not American.

About this matter, its has been discussed by the members in this portal before...its true that we got to use a good English Language for some reasons, but some of the members are still trying to improve themselves so we can't blame anyone about this...its great to see among of them struggled hard to improve themselves for the sake of the education purposes..

I agree. If we use a lot of good an correct English, we will improve our English. Read more English books.
Open your mouths and talk. When you are in a place where people do not speak English, well, it is not easylah.

We tend to ignore the basic rules when we speak because we only care about the message being delivered not the language being used. We write short forms in sms also for the same reason. We want the messages delivered and we want them delivered fast.
My suggestion,
use english words more even if it's in the middle of bahasa malaysia sentences.

i'd like to 'spice' this discussion 'up' a bit, shall i? just to relate my past experience as a teacher trainee back in the mid 80's. our english lecturer asked us "what is good english?". none of us could answer his question. then he told us that 'good english' is - simple, proper (correct), easy to speak and understandable. all of us were astonished. before the lecturer gave the answer, some of us even thought of good english as a language used by fluent and proficient speaker (i.e. almost similar to the british or american tongues)! so, engkabangites, let's don't be shy. show your students that your better than them whilst helping your collegues.  Wink

oh, one more point - instead of writing "very simple lor" (manglish = malaysian english), why not write it "it's very simple" (plain english). not unless you may want to joke, or rather, look... errr... st*pid  Grin.

Salute for those who use proper English. Even more salute for those who dares to use English to communicate here eventhough not the proper English.

Once we are in engkabang, most of us tend to participate in forums. When we participate, let us be responsible for what we write. The language form (i.e. written) we use plays a crucial role as an example to our audience, especially our students. What if, for example, we feel comfortable with, and keep on using words like coz (instead of because), wanna (instead of want to), gonna (instead of going to etc..? What would our students think? If we think that it's okay to write using 'short-forms' like in SMSes, well, the cellphone text editor is unlike typing on a keyboard. And the viewability of the phone screen is 'unnecessarily' limited, whereas typing on a keyboard infront of a monitor is a lot easier. Let's not look down on our friends who have poor command of the language, but let us also bear in mind that writing here is also as serious as talking.

p.s. a friendly reminder Wink

Yes, I really do not like to read the sentences in SMS form. Actually I hate it so much. I really do not understand what the writer is talking about. If you want to improve your English language, you must learn properly. There is no short cut to learning. When I am in the class, I make the pupils read a lot.
The more they read, the better they are in the mentioned language.

I agree with Mr. Richard. Maybe for some of us who is English teacher can advice our fellow in Enkabang.net to correct their typing in the forum from time to time. For English teacher, please take part in helping our fellow teachers in correct usage of English.

Hai everybody,

The slogan for engkabang.net is For Teachers , By Teachers. And this platform is for teachers to share their experience , problems , knowledge and many more , so as will enhance the excellence in teaching and learning by our teachers.

To me , make this platform where everybody enjoy in whatever way they want to express and try not to make any conditions which will make our teachers will shy away from giving their expression of ideas. Whatever , the most important is the message.

I do believe all the teachers in delivering their teaching and learning process, they don't use this SMS language. They use proper teaching of the language rule. SMS language is created by each individual because of the advance in technology. Anyone who can intepret the SMS had excellence in predicting what is the message they are going to say or send. SMS itself means Short Messaging System. It replace what do we called once upon a time, TELEGRAM.

Teachers had been trying very hard in doing their teaching and learning in schools.... These are their comments ;

"Most of us are using the proper English. Some pupils and teachers use the SMS style of spelling, but have been corrected from time to time. Need not get upset about it."

"but some of the members are still trying to improve themselves so we can't blame anyone about this...its great to see among of them struggled hard to improve themselves for the sake of the education purposes.."

Just sharing ,

Yes, cg Nicholas. Not only speak. Let's also practice Listening, Writing and Reading too. Becoming an expert over-night is not easy, but practicing day and night is worth doing.
