Sharing : I used Paul the Octopus's uncanny predictions in my lesson.
1. Showed the class a video of Paul choosing Spain as the winner[Youtube] which many students enjoyed .
2. Discussed the probability of Paul getting the winner in each game (1/2). He predicted 8 games.
Question 1: Binomial distribution or normal distribution? Why?
Question 2: Probability of correct prediction 8 times? x times?
3. Later, I read that Paul is 2 1/2 yrs old and the lifespan of octopus ranges from 6 months to 5 years.
4. Question: Assuming the mean lifespan of an octopus is 3 years and the standard dev. is 0.5 yrs, what's the probability of catching an octopus the same age as Paul?

It's one of our most enjoyable lessons this year, hope you like it too.

Maths is everywhere!

And I come across this in Yahoo! May be it can motivate one to study probability.

Get paid to play with numbers with these four jobs.

By Jason Latshaw

If you love math, and want to make a living working with numbers, you're in luck. With some planning and knowledge, you can easily parlay your mastery of math into some very attractive numbers - a high salary.

The fact is that nearly every industry relies on numbers in one sense or another, whether it's for forecasts, analysis, or research.

Here are four high-paying, fulfilling careers for people who love to crunch numbers.
Job #1 - Actuary

Many industries - insurance especially - need someone to figure out the probability that certain events will occur, and how to protect their bottom line in the event that they do.

Salary: The median annual wage for actuaries is $82,800, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. And those on the top end of the pay scale can easily pull in more than $100,000 a year.

Education: If the idea of being a "professional fortuneteller" that relies on numbers instead of crystal balls appeals to you, get the skills and knowledge needed to become an actuary with a degree in business, statistics, or economics.
