Hello to all chemistry teachers,
According to reference Focus Pelangi: Penicillin and streptomycin can treat tuberculosis.
According to reference Oxford Fajar and Longman : Penicillin CANNOT be used to treat tuberculosis.
So i very confuse about it.
If SPM question gonna to ask what are the example of antibiotic to treat tuberculosis disorder? Then what is the student answer?
For safe answer is streptomycin but is it penicillin is wrong?
Any teachers can share? Thank you.

-Streptomycin Huh?.....................
- Antibiotic synthesized by the actinomycete Streptomyces griseus, found in soil.
- It was among the first antibiotics discovered  after penicillin, gramicidin, and tyrocidine.
-The first antibiotic effective against tuberculosis, it interferes with the tubercle bacillus's ability to synthesize certain vital proteins. It still has some use in combination with penicillin for treating endocarditis and with tetracyclines in the treatment of plague, tularemia, and brucellosis.
-An antimicrobial drug often used to treat infections caused by gramnegative bacteria (such as tuberculosis) /TB

Cgu, beware of the some common side effects that may be experienced caused by this medicine :

allergic reactions like skin rash, itching or hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue
•breathing problems
•change in amount or color of urine
•change in hearing
•fever
•loss of balance
•pain, tingling, numbness in the hands or feet
•redness, blistering, peeling or loosening of the skin, including inside the mouth
•unusual bleeding or bruising
•unusually weak or tired

So, the best way....consult your doctor before taking the streptomycin....hehe... Smiley

This is what i found in the internet about Penicillin:
Antibiotic derived from the Penicillium mold. It was discovered in 1928 by Alexander Fleming; by 1940, Howard Walter Florey, Ernst Boris Chain, and others had produced commercial quantities that proved vital to the treatment of war casualties, making penicillin the first successful antibiotic for human bacterial infections. Many natural and semisynthetic (ampicillin, amoxicillin) variants have since been produced. All work by inhibiting the enzymes responsible for bacterial cell wall synthesis (and therefore do not work against microorganisms without cell walls or with certain variant cell walls; e.g., the tuberculosis bacillus). Among the bacteria susceptible to penicillin are those causing strep throat, spinal meningitis, gas gangrene, and syphilis. Overuse has led to drug resistance in some strains. Penicillin's chief side effect is allergy, which can be life-threatening.
** The words written in red colour shows that penicillin are NOT work in TB disorder..Thanks

Penicillin used to be a popular and effective antibiotic given to the patients in government clinic long time ago...recently they seem more interested to give streptomycin...It is due to the costly production of penicllin compared to streptomysin....Penicillin is derived from penicillium fungi through biosynthesis process and of course the cost is high to produce this industrially....while Streptomycin which is still a bactericidal antibiotic but has lower cost to produce...Nevertheless, Penicillins are still widely used today, though many types of bacteria are now resistant... : )
