interesting point of view. The good old days............those days when we have to walk miles and miles to school, those days when we can play happily in the rain. Not forgetting diving in the muddy river water. BUT now........... kids play computer games, hehehe no more river (polluted) no more playing under the  rain ( asidic ) and no more walking to school (panaslah) ,well just name them.

Yes, pity you have to walk for miles, for me, I cycle to schools through short cuts road and arrive school on time... But anyway with our vast experience , we hope that now as teachers we face a more challenging task in delivering our duty. Most of the time we keep on thinking of how to overcome with the different background of our students. Whether the school is catergorise as 'SKM' or 'Big Schools' or ' Elite Schools' or 'Cluster Schools'. What is left now with the huge burden on our back is the pure spirit in our hearts that we can still can stand tall.We hope that we not only be called 'teacher' but also a 'leader' because we are not producing machines but we are developing a balance human being. What happens today , will make a difference for tomorrow....... Now where are we now? The Good Old Days , that makes our life now a better world to live in........

Dear Jerome,
I really agreed with you.  Why let the good old days gone ?  Let us bring back the good old days.  Let us practise what is good for our children NOW.  I am teaching English Year 3.  I used to recall and teach them the way my English teacher taught me before.  I make little books for them to read.  Remember, our teachers before used to guide us to read with good intonation, expression and good pronunciation.  I don't want them to read monotonously or "sing" with strong Foochow accent !  Read lively and the listeners will find it interesting.  In telling stories, use the correct tone and varied the voices so that listeners will find the stories enjoyable and the whole lesson will be fun.

Just speak to them in English.  Some may say that they don't understand.  Well, to start with, they may find difficulties in understanding me.... now I can feel that they understand me cos I got what I want when I give a directive or request.  hahaha you will enjoy a wonderful feeling within when you find them growing to like English.  Get the kids to love English .......... this can be done through several ways like singing, chanting in a rhythmatic way like stamping their feet, with actions etc.......ooooooooooh they will love it.  Show good examples ourselves by speaking proper English to teachers.  Tell them the importance of English in this modern world.  Let the school library be open.... Decorate it and make it attractive and condusive for reading.... and Program NILAM, order the books, magazines and even comics which they like.  Do you allow them to read comics like Professor Q ? I don't see them as harmful because my own children used to pester me to buy when they were small.  Now though they are already grown ups and pursuing their studies overseas, they still keep these books neatly on their shelves in the study room.  They treasure their books.  On their vacation back they still read them.  Reading is a very wonderful habit to cultivate.  Through reading we can gain a lot of extra knowledge which our teachers might not teach.  Books can be considered as the best TEACHER !  So do try to encourage more reading... meaningful reading... silent reading with understanding.  When children are engrossed with books they forget to be mischievous.  By getting less and less mischievous, they will get used to it and so contribute to less discipline problem in schools and homes.  So happy trying and happy teaching.  Looking forward to more sharing from you .......bye.  God Bless You.

Hai,

Wow Christina , its a long and nice suggestions to us all in how to enhance the language. Sure the way , the good olds days did , are drilling , response , listen, speak , read , and write. All these components was done in a proper guided lessons and done in a more enjoying , inovative and crative manner..... Library ? How is the library attract students to read books? Make it a place for them to relax and read books. Try to make it more spacious, Can sit on the chair, floor, sofa or other might think of.

From my experience, I will always ask the students to bring a story book , wherever they go.....eventhough they did not read it, but they have to carry. This will make those students who don;'t like reading , will indirectly make the students to read.... After sometime, you will see the difference. Don't worry about the books get damage, that is the risk we take... unless they do it on purpose...

Keep it up ...

Just sharing...

with regard to the above, i recall the use of substitution tables by our teachers. we were 'drilled' on one particular pattern all throughout the lesson. the next day, the same thing was done. it was done until (almost) every kid could master the pattern. remember learning the pattern "I have a ruler / pencil / book / bicycle, etc." ? it's repetitive, and at the end of the day, the pattern was 'fossilized' in the head.

Hai everybody,

Yes, I do agree with you Cikgu Richard. The substitution tables displayed on the English Corner Wall. Besides that, the first thing we did , was to read the sentence pattern one by one from the substitution table. I still remember we have to do a daily dairy about

Today is........Monday....
It is ........Sunny.........

This is a ball
It is green.

I like to play. ( play what? )
I like to play football. ( with who ? )
I like to play football with my friends. ( where ? )
I like to play football with my friends at the school field. ( when? )
I like to play football with my friends at the school field in the evening.

** This is what we call sentence forming by using 'wh' questions...**

And then a few sentence pattern about the picture given. The teacher drew the picture.....

Hello everyone...
It's interesting to see fellow educators discussing the good old days... Well for me... "good old days" have never left me.... It is still so vivid in me and often enough I will share those memories with my younger colleagues....

Talking about music, school bands, orchestra, etc in schools... yeah... it would be beneficial for the students. Another subject which I believe would be beneficial if carried out properly is our Physical Education. I still remember those times when I was in school... PE was my favourite ... and my friends too... cos we could really go out of the classroom and play our hearts out.. Not like now... PE lessons are conveniently used for finishing syllabus and other purposes ....  We also find teachers who do not know much about PE teaching the subject... sigh... that's the scenario... Undecided

My good old days.... playing rounders, softball, playing batu, guli, "ah lok ah seng" [funny game that we play] ... wont trade it for anything....

Hai Cikgu Lim and everbody,

Firstly , i agree and love recollecting the memories of the past. It is as if we have the same type of experience.....
I think nowadays , there are more challenges for the education environment... Like the subject PJK, PSV , KHSR , P.Moral, Muzik,KT,PSK, are subjects to help the students to be more balance in their mentality besides the core subjects. Nothing could change the way of how to educate our younger generations if it does'nt start off with us. It is coming back to our attitude of how we go around with the work being assigned to us...... Well , i still remember the first time i saw a television set. ( Black and White ) Then some innovative person came out with a plastic screen of 3 sections ; the top part of the screen was blue ( representing the sky ) the middle was light brown ( representing the environment ) and the bottom part was green ( representing the grass ).

Well , now the world had change,  but the memories of the good old days are still fresh.......
