Just sharing based on my experience teaching at college now. The very first week or two, I drill my students on the Eight Parts of Speech in English; namely, nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, interjections and articles and determiners.
I get them to get used to the terms and to relate to the terms in learning new words, and glad to admit, they could see the connection between words and their groupings in the English grammar.
By the way, the level of English usage amongst my current students are close to nothing or zero.

Hello,
It's interesting to read the responses posted on line about the mastery of English Language among teachers and our students.   Well, the reasons for incompetency would be subjective to individual teachers as they teach students who are from different backgrounds and levels - primary or secondary school students.  I think we should share more about how we tackle students from the different groups so that our sharing would be meaningful (not dwelling on the problems).  I am sure there are many of you (teachers) out there who have tried many practical ways to help your students.  Please do not hesitate to share your valuable experiences.  I am sure many are eager to know and try new ways with their students.  Thanks.

It is simply wonderful to read through the comments posted and I am impressed with some of the comments mentioned. I have a firm believe that we, teachers can make the different in our students if we are willing enough to spend time to better ourselves linguistically by mastering the nooks and nuances of English or Bahasa Malaysia.
Keep up the good work and yes, we are on the right path.

Good day everyone,

Very exciting to read all the comments posted here. I do agree with what Ms. Suzanne said. We should share more about the ways to teach English here.

Just wanted to share a bit of my experience teaching in remote school (Penan school). I learned the local language day by day and translated the English words in Penan dialect during class. In Maktab, I know we are not allowed to do so (translating the English words in other languages) especially during the praktikum but I think it is the better way for them to learn a foreign language rather than learning nothing and understand nothing at all. In fact, Malay language is learned as 2nd language there because they only speak their language in their daily life. But I encourage them to answer me in English during the class eventhough not in full English. I hope what I did is okay. What is your opinion about this?  Cool

Mr. Joseph, I tried to apply the same thing with what you did with your students. Try to drill my students on the Eight Parts of Speech in English; namely, nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, interjections and articles and determiners but seems that it is not functioning and still hard for them. Hope there is any other ways to teach them to understand and learn English especially the Parts of Speech.  Roll Eyes

Make English a fun subject to learn and be creative in our approaches. Susah2 dulu senang2 kemudian.

I agree, Ms Anita. But small schools cannot avoid assigning teachers teaching two languages.

I also believe that everything must start with 'Interest'. If a student or teacher is not interested at all in a particular thing or subject, then it obviously will make that person harder to learn or master that particular subject such as English or even History...

We have learnt English for so many years in school, therefore it is impossible to claim that they don't understand it...
If they can understand movies in Hindi, Korean, Japanese or Indonesian languages even though these languages are not taught in schools proves that a person's INTEREST is an important ingredient to learn or master any languages.... Smiley

"Don't be Shy-shy...."  Grin

Teachers, we may not the like of the late Victorian explorer, Sir Richard Burton but at least we can understand and use on average three languages and some of us might know four or more languages. Sir Richard Burton was fluent in 26 languages, and thus making it possible for him to travel all over Africa and the Middle East sometimes disguised as an Arab or Libyan from North Africa.
Ethnically and linguistically I am an Iban, and Iban is my mother tongue. So I am fluent in Iban. Then I entered school where I learned English and BM, so I can speak and understand an additional two more languages. Thus, I am a multi-lingual but what level of multi-linguistic, is it fluent, is it good, is it medium or is it mediocre. This are the questions that we need to ask ourselves.
I can definitely said that I am fluent in English and BM, verbally and in written forms. This fluency does not come by itself but rather through trials and errors besides the willingness to study and to re-learn what I have learned in the past.
So, to all teachers, if you feel that you are inadequate in linguistic competency, by all means, better yourselves.
In conclusion, seniority in services is not the yard-stick in determining the ability of our teachers to teach in English.
