Wei Lin, please bear in mind that writing is an ongoing process. Some say that a book is the final product of the writing process, but, some say the book can still be 'polished'.

To produce a good piece of writing, Wei Lin should not be satisfied with merely a few drafts. But several drafts are very good. I do believe Wei Lin's teachers are very keen to help - but it takes a lot of time, especially if drafts are quite lengthy. Besides writing from our own idea, we need to look at other writers' work piece.

Writing is an ongoing process. Before we start writing, we need to know the three fundamental aspects of writing. Firstly is the audience, secondly is the tone and finally is the purpose.
A. Audience
- Audience means the people who will read your written work. If you are a student, then your audience is the examiner who will be marking your paper. Knowing your audience will help you to communicate clearly and effectively.
B. Tone
- Tone is your style or manner of expression, which is revealed by your choice of words and grammatical structures. The tone of your writing could be serious, amusing, personal, or impersonal.
C. Purpose
- The purpose of your writing will determines the organisational form and style of your writing.

What is a paragraph?
A paragraph is a basic unit of organisation in writing in which a group of related sentences develops one main idea. There are three parts of a paragraph.

A. Topic Sentence - states the main idea of a paragraph. It names the topic but it also limit the topic to one or two areas. This specific area is called the controlling idea.
For example,
Gold, a precious metal, is prized for two important characteristics..Gold is the topic and two important characteristics are the controlling ideas.

B. Supporting sentences - develop the topic sentence. They explain the topic sentence by giving reasons, examples, facts, statistics, and quotations.
First of all, gold has a lustrous beauty that is resistant to corrosion.
Another important characteristic of gold is its usefulness to industry and science

C. Concluding sentence - signals the end of the paragraph and leaves the reader with important point to remember.

I will talk about the writing processes in days to come.

We don't know your level in writing an essay so we can't point out the specific areas where you must focus on. It would be better if you can copy and paste a sample of your essay in here so that we can see where your weaknesses are. Maybe just a recount (story) around 150 - 180 words? Then it will be easier to guide you. However, while waiting for you to post your sample essay (if you do post it), here are some tips on how you can write well.

1. If you have problem with your sentence structure, practice by writing short sentences first.
2, After you have written those short sentences, practice combining them into a compound sentence. Remember that you can get higher marks if you can make complex sentences.
3. Try to make your essay as interesting as possible by adding a lot of supporting details for your main points. You can do this by asking yourself the WH- questions. Who? What? When? etc...
4. Try to use some idiomatic expressions, proverbs or phrasal verbs in your essay. It is advisable for you to use at least 2 or 3 of them. Not too much cos that will seem too desperate. Heheh!
5. Arrange your ideas into paragraphs. 1 main idea, 1 paragraph. You will get higher marks if you can present your ideas well.
6. Remember your tenses. If your essay is in present tense, make sure you use all present tense. If it's in past tense, use all past tense. Students tend to get mixed up when writing their essays. In one sentence they use present tense, in the other past tense.
7. Learn the different formats for different types of writing. Using the wrong format for your essay can cause you to lose precious marks.
8. Read more! Not just story books or newspapers but magazines, comics, movies with subtitles, advertisements or even food wrappers! You can also read blogs on the Internet. Some blogs are quite interesting and some bloggers can convey their ideas in very unique ways. You can learn from that. The good things alright? Not the negative remarks or propagandas that you might come across in those blogs. Heheh!
9. Be willing to make mistakes. You learn from mistakes. They should not get in the way.

All the best!

Wei Lin, I fully agree with Cikgu Martin. It is better to write short but correct sentences, rather than long and complicated sentences that are wrong. I also advocate the use of WH-Question words to help you generate ideas for writing. Don't also forget to use connectors such as "Besides", "However", "Therefore" correctly.

Sentence connectors are essential in writing. In English there are three types of sentence connectors.
a. Coordinators (FAN BOYS)- for, and, nor, but, or, yet and so.
Connectors are used to connect two equal sentences or clauses.
I like playing computer and I love singing.
b. Subordinators are used especially in complex and compound-complex sentences.
English grammar is difficult, so I have to learn it wholeheartedly.
c. Conjunctive adverbs
I like ice-cream; however, I hate tea.

Go back to the basics. Reinforce your grammar. Learn the tenses to write sentences correctly. Then, learn how to organise an essay.

Eg.SPM 1119 English, Continuous writing.

Introduction(how to start?);
1. surprise technique- "I heard a knock on the door..."
2. Question- "Do we ever care how the world would be like a hundred years from now?"
3. Quotation- e.g any famous saying, idioms or proverbs.
4. creative idea- "It was dark and spooky. I could not open my eyes."
5. Action- "The ambulance screeched to a hault. He was quickly rolled to the emergency ward."
6. Factual statement- "Smoking kills."

Contents- Ask yourself What? Who? How? Why? Where? to get ideas for every paragraph.

Ending
1. Sum up ideas
2. End with a climax
3. Give your opinion(What will happen next/in the future)
4. Moral value(give an advice)
5. Finality- "That was the incident that I will never forget in my life."
