Recently when I was teaching my Form 2 students on two topics  ie "Hubungan Kependudukan dengan Sumber" - Bab 11  and "Petempatan" - Bab 12 and I discovered something very interesting.

these two text book ie Text book 1 and text book 2

(Text Book 1 - “Geografi Tingkatan 2”.  Writers: Latifah binti Mahfod and Shamshiah binti Ahmad.  Publisher: Edaran Kemajuan (M) Sdn Bhd
and
Text Book 2 - “Geografi Tingkatan 2”.  Writers: Chong Mui Sen and
Azizan bin Hj Abu Samah.  Publisher: Percetakan Saufi)

gave two contradictory facts.  I always reminded my students to refer to their text books as the "correct" facts/ information.

Text Book 1 refers Brazil as "Penduduk Berlebihan" pg106
while
Text Book 2 refers Brazil as "Kurang Penduduk " pg 109

Text Book 1 refers Felda settlement as "Petempatan berkelompok" pg 123
while
Text Book 2 refers Felda settlement as "Petempatan berpusat" pg128

The last two years of teaching Geography Form 2, Ive been religiously using the text book given to me by my Ketua Panitia so the problem didnt arise at all. But recently, after getting used to the syllabus I thought of venturing into using refence books and other text books available.  There's when I stumbled upon these two glaring contradictory facts...

By the way, most schools in Sarawak are using the former text book (just like my school) while the latter one is used by the Semenanjung schools.

May I know which "information/fact" is corrrect??  Isnt it unfair to penalise the students if the text book is giving them wrong facts/information?

Hi, Pn. Yap.  It's true that a few mistakes are found in Geography text book especially Tingkatan 2 and Tingkatan 4.  As for Penduduk Berlebihan and Kurang Penduduk, we have to refer to resources of that country.  If it has a lot of natural resources (sumber yang belum diterokai) as compared to the population, then it is categorized as Kurang Penduduk.  Apart from that, the other characteristics of kurang penduduk is the use of Technology and the Per Capita Income.  Hence, even Australia can be categorizes as Overpopulation due to its vast area of desert.  For more info. click:
http://www.answers.com/overpopulation

I read somewhere in the reference book also, there are two version:  one mentioning Ethiopia to be Penduduk berlebihan, the other one Kurang Penduduk. It should be penduduk berlebihan.

As for the case Felda resettlement scheme, "ladang getah and Kelapa sawit" which is mostly owned by private company, it should be petempatan berkelompok.

even reference books have contradictory information.

why not standardise text book for all state?

i also have problem to decide when my students argue 2 different facts. Sometimes when we refer to  text book, there's no information / further information.

so teachers,what would you do?

I think KPM should revise this two textbooks...If u take a serious observation and readings of those two textbooks, some of the facts are out-of-date..What i did i do? I refer to some trusted and reliable resources to ammend and verify the facts.

Correct. The PMR question about recycling programme "4 in 1" in Taiwan also is not found in our textbook, but luckily I have exposed my students about the fact from the reference book.  So far, I have not come across "good" reference book.  The latest I found "Zoom In cemerlang & terbilang -  Info-didik" is quite up-to-date, but still got mistake here and there.  As for the maps, I think most of the time we still need to refer to the atlas.  I find that Atlas KBSM is quite handy.

I prefer to take  examples from students' surroundings. That's more efficient. And then, try to relate to that in the text book..
